Since our last post, we have completed an entire rework of the interaction system. With our goal of creating something that works with the upcoming gathering system, we needed to rework a few things in order for it to be handled properly on the server side. The result, it a much cleaner interaction process that can accommodate some of the newer features of the build system as well as the radial button for gathering.
Aside from the interaction components, we were able to get the "Ping system" in place. I searched the Epic Storefront for a quality plugin and found this one: Smart Multiplayer Ping System.
The plugin was simple to add to our existing system, however there were some small issues with getting it to work in dedicated server mode. The creator was very responsive and helpful in troubleshooting till we resolved the issue. For now, we have a work around that gets it to work. This is one of the many reasons I avoid adding any outsourced plugins, but this one was defiantly worth the struggle. I need to modify the style of it to match our UI, but here is what it looks like so far:
Lastly, I have been working with an artist named ZugZug who has been helping to create the first kitbash for the town/village buildings. After a few weeks, we are finally getting closer to an end product. You can see the tiles here:
Once all of the tiles are finished and properly aligned, ZugZug will texture them and prepare them for the final art pass. I am super hyped to get this stuff in place as my plan is to use PCG with UE5.2 to create multiple versions of the city. You can expect more art in the coming weeks as we work through all of this.
